This lesson builds upon students understanding of composition of transformations. In this project, students will create a tessellation from a group of shapes that have been transformed through reflection, rotation and translation.
Social Networking Technology:
Diigo page to share research for social bookmarking
Voicethread for Education for the presentation of student work as a formative/summative assessment
Canvas Discussion to connect real world applications to math and geometric transformations.
Activity #1 - Social Bookmarking Activity Research what is a tessellation and/or how to create a tessellation. Share your research with classmates through our collaborative platform for knowledge sharing. Post at least 1 unique link to the class social networking diigo page. We will use this link to communicate to others.
Activity #2 - Voicethread for Education Create a tessellation using technology or copy of shapes with paper and pencil. Watch this video to help you get started: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eb36i-FU3NM
Activity #3 - Asynchronous Discussion Using Canvas Discussion, describe (1 paragraph) and upload an image on how tessellations are used outside of math class. If you use references, you must cite them as you do in English and Social Studies. You will respond to at least 2 persons in the group. Your response should include more than “good job”. Here are some sentence starters to help you form a response. You may use these ideas or form your own.
