According to the Common Core State Initiatives (commoncore.org) - Mathematical instruction for ELLs should address mathematical discourse and academic language.
TESOL outlines three shifts for instruction of ELL and provides recommendations for teachers to make this shift.
1. Build knowledge through scaffold and support of non-fiction (math). 2. Reading, writing and speaking grounded with non-linguistic representation of academic language. 3. Regular practice with complex text which requires explicitly teaching formal academic language
Through this lesson, students will connect informal to formal language, read and listen to non-fictional material, practice the complex task through formative assessments and games, and be provided opportunities for academic discourse..
